Laser treatment is generally very effective at removing age spots, liver spots, sunspots and brown spots on the skin. It is the treatment of choice for these pigmented lesions. Lasers work by emitting a beam of specialized light that is passed through the skin and preferentially absorbed by only the pigmented cells in the skin. The laser causes the pigments to break up and disappear, leaving you with smooth, clear skin. There are several lasers available that work remarkably well in treating unwanted pigmentation.
Most patients describe the sensation to feel like the snap of a rubber band on the skin as the laser pulses are delivered to the skin. Following treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.
Typically only one, two or more treatment sessions are all that are necessary to completely remove the spots depending on how many there are and on which area of the body. Occasionally, darker and larger lesions may require additional treatment to obtain optimal results.
Depending on the number, size, and location of the pigmented spots, the laser treatment sessions usually take only a few minutes.
Not usually. In general, we find that laser removal of age spots is permanent, however people do sometimes see new spots appear as they go back out into the sun. These are new spots forming as a result of age spots, not a recurrence of the old, removed spots. Optimal results can be maintained only if you apply sunscreen diligently on the treated area and avoid future sun exposure.
Yes. Lasers and advanced light systems have been used safely on millions of patients of all ages worldwide. These systems treat only the targeted lesions (spots), leaving the surrounding tissue intact. There are many benefits to laser surgery including little if any pain, no need for injections or needles, and minimal bruising or swelling. The risk of scarring or discoloration is minimal.
Following laser treatment, there may be a little discoloration. After several days, a crust will form which will later fall off, usually within 7-14 days. Occasionally, some discoloration may persist for several months.
