It is the resurfacing technique consisting of mechanical abrasion of the skin with pressurized stream of aluminium oxide crystals .Due to simplicity of the procedure and no side effects it has become popular amongst dermatologists and patients alike.
Microdermabrasion produces positive changes in both superficial and deeper support layers of the skin by superficial wounding. Part of the upper layer of the skin ,surface oil and dirt are removed immediately on direct impact of aluminium oxide crystals on the skin surface. The damaged skin is removed and fresh skinreappears with remodeling and tightening of support structure.
Microdermabrasion unit consists of two systems-Projection and suction.
Projection system-it has compressor responsible for controlled projection of sterile aluminium oxide crystals. Suction system creates vacuum and sucks epidermal debris , grime and used aluminium oxide crystals.

When can microdermabrasion be done?

About the procedure

• Skin is cleaned and degreased.
• Machine is activated and parameters set. Pressure is adjusted between10 mmHg and 30 mmHg depending on number of passes planned.
• Hand piece is placed gently on skin surface with tip perpendicular to skin
• With gentle outward movements whole face is covered slowly.
• Neck region can also be treated in similar way.
• Multiple passes depending on indication can be made.
• A soothing cream/ chemical peel or a mesoproduct(cosmeceutical) is applied depending on indication.
• Sun protection and sunscreens are advised.

Schedule:

Repeat sittings at two weeks for 6 sittings for superficial lesions and 15-20 sittings at 3-4 weeks interval for deep lesions. Total number of sittings may vary from patient to patient.

Side effects:

Mild redness, swelling or increased skin sensitivity which subsides before 24 hours.
